Lewes Peddell - Conductor

Lewes Peddell was born in Townsville (Australia) in 1966 - with
listening to recordings of Louis Armstrong among his first musical experiences. From this beginning he has developed a passion for musical expression initially on trumpet and more recently through teaching, composing, conducting and research.

Peddell received a Diploma of Teaching in Music from the Queensland University of Technology, and a Bachelor of Music and Graduate Diploma - both in trumpet performance - from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. During this time, he performed as an orchestral musician (trumpet) with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra, as a pit musician with the Victorian State Orchestra for their production of the ballet Giselle, and as both an on-stage and off-stage trumpeter for the Queensland Opera company production of AIDA.

After 10 years of successful middle and high school music teaching, Peddell traveled to the USA where, at the University of Minnesota, he completed a Master of Music degree in Wind Conducting, and a Ph.D. with concentrations in conducting and music education. His principal conducting teacher at Minnesota was Craig Kirchhoff and more recently is Stuart Malina, principal conductor of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. Peddell recently participated by invitation in the American Orchestra League: 2005 Donald Thulean Conducting Workshop - Detroit.

Peddell is an Assistant Professor of Music at the Sunderman
Conservatory of Music - Gettysburg College, where he serves as Director of Bands and Orchestral Activities. His responsibilities include: directing the Gettysburg College "Bullet" Marching Band; conducting of the Symphony
Band, Wind Ensemble and College-Community Orchestra; and teaching instrumental methods and conducting courses in the Bachelor of Science Music Education degree.

Lewes lives in Mechanicsburg with his Katie and their very recently born daughter Sophie. This production of Otello will be his opera-conducting debut.
