Hailed by Opera News (A publication of the Metropolitan Opera) for possessing “the most musical and stylistic sophistication onstage, taking everything...as Rossini would have expected, ” John Villemaire, tenor, recently made his debut at Carnegie Hall with New York Lyric Opera Theatre’s Opera Gala as Roméo in a passionate scene from Roméo et Juliette. Recent credits have included Il Duca in Rigoletto, Idreno in Semiramide with The Opera Project; Don Ramiro (Prince), (La Cenerentola- Cinderella) with Opera New Jersey and Opera Columbus; Giannetto in Rossini’s La gazza ladra, with Bronx Opera; Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni with CSO, the title role inIdomeneo with Cantanti Opera; Ernesto in Don Pasquale with Opera Company of Brooklyn. John is the two- time recipient of the Lynne Cushman Award, and a Finalist in the New York Lyric Opera Theatre Competition. Upcoming engagements encompass Rodolpho in La Bohème and Nemorino in Elixir of Love with CSO, and the Tenor Soloist in Berlioz’s L'Enfance du Christ with the Hunterdon Choral Society.
Illuminated through words and song, John aims to communicate to many audiences on a human level, while additionally having provided community educational outreach with organizations such as The Boys and Girls Club of Trenton, the Newark Public School District, as well as the Princeton Hun School. Mr. Villemaire (Calkins) is a licensed educator, and teaches privately in the NJ/PA area, many of his students have championed solo competitions, received superior ratings for state-adjudicated solo contests, and auditioned successfully for performing ensembles, musicals, and collegiate music programs. Known for his communicative and warm, sonorous tone, John Villemaire is often sought out as a versatile soloist and frequents in oratorio, musical theatre and private events, offering Musical Theatre, Opera and Holiday Concerts.
